Sciatica


 

Sciatica comes from the sciatic nerve which originates in the buttocks area.  The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in the body.  It’s actually made up of five nerve roots: two from the lower back region called lumbar spine and three from the final section of the spine called the sacrum.  The five nerve roots come together to form a right and left sciatic nerve.  It runs through hips, buttocks and down the leg, ending just below the knee, branching into other nerves, continue down your leg and into your foot and toes.

Sciatica is pain affecting the back and or buttocks pain into the thigh and down the leg.  There is possibility of some or all symptoms: Pain, numbness and tingling, weakness and change is posture may cause pain to improve or get worse.  Some movements such as coughing, sitting, trying to go from sitting to standing, bending, twisting can cause increase in pain. The cause is from irritation, inflammation, pinching or compression of the sciatic nerve with the most common cause is a herniated disc or disc protrusion.
